Working in Scotland
A contract should say the job title, pay, hours, holiday and notice. Read it before you sign. If a sentence is unclear, ask. You can also ask a friend who reads English well. inthire does not replace advice from an employment adviser.
A payslip shows gross pay, tax, National Insurance and what you actually receive. Keep your payslips. If the numbers do not match the hours you worked, ask your employer in writing.
Common words: shift means the block of hours you work. Rota is the plan of who works when. Probation is a trial period at the start. Notice is how long you or the employer must wait before the job ends. Zero-hours means there is no guaranteed weekly work. Ask which of these apply.
Workplaces are usually direct. Please and thank you matter. So does saying when you do not understand. That is not rude.
If something feels unsafe or unpaid, you can contact ACAS for free employment information. That is separate from inthire.
